There are a few things I know for sure:
- Sexual assault and domestic violence are never the victim’s fault. Never.
- We will never end these crimes by teaching people to be safer. We will end them by teaching people to see and treat one another as equals. Period.
- People who respond to survivors are superheroes. And they need to be inspired and empowered, so they can keep saving the world – each and every day.
I have worked with survivors for many years, as an advocate and attorney. But ending sexual assault and domestic violence is more than just my career – it’s part of who I am. And the amazing advocates I’ve had the opportunity to work with have humbled, inspired, and motivated me to approach this work from a little different perspective.
You are all the front line warriors in this work. You truly are superheroes. And you need to – deserve to – feel inspired and empowered. You need to connect to one another. And you need tools to help you combat these epidemics. Because really, ending sexual and domestic violence starts with you.
As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, I understand the shame and trauma that survivors experience. And as an advocate, I also understand the helplessness and trauma we often experience. But, I also strongly believe in the strength and power we each possess. We have amazing abilities – superpowers, really – to help people feel heard, believed, and respected. And it’s important that we keep ourselves inspired and motivated, so we can keep saving the world – each and every day.
Throughout my career, I have spoken to thousands of people – advocates, attorneys, military personnel, healthcare professionals, and more. I talk about very serious issues, but in a not-so-serious (or not always serious) way. I believe that people need to learn in a non-judgmental, interactive, and dynamic way. Humor is important. Real life examples are essential. And learning is a process.
If you’re feeling stuck, helpless, or uninspired, I’d love to work with you. I would be honored to help you discover new and innovative ways to respond to sexual assault and domestic violence, and ultimately to end these epidemics. And most of all, I would love to help you feel excited about your work – and about changing the world.
It can happen – we can do it together. I look forward to talking with you soon.
